Asbestos Removal Cost Barriers
For homeowners, the asbestos removal cost is the main obstacle when it comes to deciding whether or not to remove asbestos from their property. What other barriers prevent homeowners from removing asbestos? The Australian Safety and Eradication Agency (ASEA) explain asbestos removal barriers in their ASEA Report.
Asbestos is a highly heat-resistant fibrous silicate mineral that can be woven into fabrics and is widely known for its use in building materials and structures. Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause deadly diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
We know that approximately one-third of Australian homes contain some form of asbestos-containing material. We also know that there are many homeowners who choose not to remove asbestos identified within their residence.
The recently published ASEA Report states:
- The asbestos removal cost is the main factor in decision-making processes
- Low levels of risk relating to asbestos materials is a barrier to informed decision-making
- The perception of how likely asbestos will impact an individual’s health is associated with likelihood to remove asbestos
So what can be done to help Australians remove the 1.5 million tonnes of asbestos from our homes and building structures?
Proposed Asbestos Removal Cost Subsidy
According to the ASEA, the asbestos removal cost should be subsidised through a Government incentive to push homeowners into removing asbestos from their properties and ensure its exposure is significantly reduced over time. Their concern is also based on the underlying fact that a number of homeowners will be wanting to renovate their homes in the nearby future and may be at risk of exposure to the asbestos material.
We hope that in the near future Australians can receive Government incentives to invest in the safety of their homes. In the meantime, Southstar Asbestos Removals will continue to engage with concerned homeowners and provide cost-effective asbestos removal solutions, putting our clients at ease and reassurance for their health and safety.
